Junior Jag Youth Sports


 

We believe in the positive impact athletics has on young people, so Wellington offers youth sports opportunities for students in 1st through 6th grades.

 

CrossFit Kids – 2nd through 5th Grade

CrossFit Kids is a fitness program geared and designed for the specific needs of children. CrossFit workouts consist of constantly varied functional movements and elicit a response that will improve neurological, cognitive, and motor development. The workouts are completely scalable for each individual child. No two workouts are the same and the children will be constantly challenged in new ways.

CrossFit Kids is offered in both the fall and spring.

 

Junior Jag Tennis – 1st through 5th Grade

Tennis is a lifetime sport that can teach young athletes mental toughness and coordination, as well as build their confidence. The skills that tennis builds, such as hand-eye coordination and fast-twitch muscle reflexes, can easily benefit success in other sports. In this early introduction to tennis, players will learn fundamentals and have fun! We also focus on flexibility and balance, while developing entry into the next level of game-play.

Junior Jag Tennis is offered in both the fall and spring.

 

Junior Jag Swimming – 1st through 5th Grade

The Junior Jag Swim program offers a developmental swim opportunity for Wellington students in grades 1-5. The program focuses on keeping children active, building confidence in the water, and introducing the participants to the basic sport of swimming. Wellington students are bused to Aquatic Adventures and returned back to school each day.

Junior Jag Swim is offered in the spring each year.

 

Wellington Youth Basketball League – 1st through 5th Grade

Students in 1st through 5th grades may participate in the Wellington Youth Basketball League (WYBL) during the winter. The league is open to boys and girls from all area schools, however due to facility limitations, participation is limited to the first 250 registrants. This program provides good competition and skill development without the travel.

Divisions include:

  • 1st – 2nd Grade Co-Ed (3 v 3 – 1/2 court – 8 foot baskets)
  • 3rd – 5th Grade Girls and Boys (5 v 5 – full court – 10 foot baskets)

Additional details:

  • Each team practices (1/2 court) one weeknight per week from 6:30-7:30 p.m. or 7:30-8:30 p.m.
  • Games are played on Saturday mornings
  • Each team plays one or two games per week

October 6 Registration opens
October 27 Registration closes
October 28 WYBL coaches meeting
Week of November 13 Practices begin
December 2 Games begin
February 3 Season ends

Wellington Basketball – 5th/6th Grade Team

Wellington offers 5th and 6th grade students the opportunity to try out for the school’s travel basketball team. The team participates in the Central Ohio Basketball League (COBA). Membership also includes a preseason preview and a tournament at the end of the season. The primary goal of the league is player development and preparation for middle school basketball by teaching fundamentals in a competitive atmosphere.

Wellington will ensure any 5th or 6th grade student who desires to participate in basketball has the opportunity to do so at a level that will help develop their skill and confidence. Wellington 5th grade students who are not placed on the travel team will be provided an opportunity on a WYBL team.

  • Practice commitment is two evenings per week, starting in early November
  • Games are generally played on Saturday and/or Sunday afternoons

 

Wellington Soccer – 5th/6th Grade Team

Wellington offers 5th and 6th grade students the opportunity to play for the school’s developmental coed soccer team. The team participates in the Central Ohio Youth Soccer League (COYSL). The primary goal of the league is player development and preparation for middle school soccer by teaching fundamentals in a competitive atmosphere.

  • Practice commitment is two evenings per week, starting in mid August
  • Teams play a 12 game schedule
