Growing numbers of central Ohio students are getting acquainted with a feel-good team sport invented by a Swiss biologist 40 years ago that is popular in Canada, Europe and Asia but virtually unknown in this country.
One place where it is catching on is the Wellington School, whose middle- and high-school students play the game in gym class. “Anything that gets a student to see beyond . . . (his or her) own little world is a positive,” said Robert Brisk, head of the school. Physical-education teachers Dave Herrick, Bill Miller and Trent Neely discovered the sport during an education conference in 2008.

Others may cringe when Wellington School sophomore Brittany Anderson competes on the 1-meter diving board, but her mother never even flinches.

Wellington School will be invaded by dozens of robots this weekend, powered by the minds of hundreds of students from Ohio and surrounding states. For the first time, Wellington will play host to First Tech Challenge (FTC) Central Ohio Qualifier, a contest that pits schools’ robotics clubs against one another in a contest of engineering.

With the help of past and present students, Wellington School teacher Matthew Spencer is looking to help get Central Ohio on the scholastic robotics map.  The Upper Arlington private school has had two FIRST Tech Challenge robotics teams for three years, and this weekend, it will host its first-ever Central Ohio qualifying competition.


Wellington Middle School students visited three places of worship to learn about religious differences around the world: Christianity at Trinity United Methodist Church in Marble Cliff, Judaism at Congregation Beth Tikvah in Worthington and Islam at the Noor Islamic Cultural Center in Hilliard.

Roseler, of Worthington, traveled to D.C. in early November to study Somalia for her senior project because of the many political and social problems its people are facing.

The Wellington School presents its fall musical this weekend as Upper School students perform the Tony Award-winning comedy The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

The Jaguars have continued to play at a high level in reaching their fourth straight Division III state tournament.

Wellington 7th and 8th graders work in advisory teams to build trust during high ropes challenges. It is a team-building event. There are also curricular-support issues built in, such as risk-taking, failure and problem-solving.

A new menu design at The Wellington School that includes an average weekly nutritional analysis is recognized as extraordinary.
