Math Estimathon

POSTED BY The Wellington School ON September 21, 2017 IN , ,

Middle school math students put their Fermi problem-solving skills to the test at Wellington’s first Estimathon. Working together in teams, students were asked to come up with high and low estimates for questions such as:

  • Number of positive whole numbers less than 100,000 containing the digit 5.
  • Area of the state of Ohio in square miles.
  • Height (in feet) of the tallest building in Columbus.
  • Number of words in the seven Harry Potter books (British version).

After submitting their estimates, teams watched their results tabulated in real time. Students were excited about the competition that math teacher Sean Corey designed after attending a summer conference with some of the top mathematicians in the world. Read more about it in Well Said.
