Former Middle School Language Arts teacher Mary Potter P ‘01 ‘04 visited Wellington to talk about kindness, respect, and friendship with 3rd graders. Drawing from her memories as both a student and teacher, Potter shared her own experiences feeling like an outsider as a child and witnessing unkindness. She discussed the importance of not just word choice but also tone when speaking and when students should speak up for themselves or a classmate who might be in danger of harm. Potter emphasized the Wellington Way of treating people with kindness through skits she had students act out, illustrating the importance of empathy and understanding for others in the classroom and the playground. “Try to do better for yourself,” Potter said.
