Early Childhood and Lower School November News

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Robert Brault, a journalist, encourages us to, “Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.” Wellington educators live this quote each day. We look for the little moments to celebrate because we know how those little moments add up to the successes of the school year.

A few of those little moments that have taken place this past month:

  • Kindergarteners kicked off their passion projects with topics such as fish, golf, and stingrays. One kindergarten class even spent an afternoon at a local golf course riding in a golf cart and learning how to drive a ball using different clubs.
  • Second graders researched different symbols of the United States of America, and they shared their research with their peers in the format of a campaign for their favorite symbol. The students showed their voter registration cards, cast their votes, and held their breaths as the ballots were counted. Ask a second grader what symbol won!
  • The third grade teaching team partnered with Ms. Foster, math differentiation specialist, to support and stretch students in working through multiplication problem strings and thinking flexibly and fluently about strategies to solve multiplication problems. This hard work is the foundation in multiplicative reasoning.
  • Fourth graders spent a beautiful day at Glen Helen and imagined their two-night sleepover experience that will take place there this February.

There are a few pieces of information to share about parent/teacher conferences that are right around the corner:

  • Progress reports will go live on November 22 at 12 p.m. The reports will be posted in the Veracross portal; it is helpful to read your child's progress report before the parent teacher conference.
  • Supporting Your Emerging Reader Parent Coffee: An opportunity to hear how you can best support your early reader at home using research-based practices. This parent coffee on November 20 is intended for parents of Little Jags to first grade students, and will begin at 8:15 a.m. and continue until 9 a.m. in the Doerschlag Den. You may RSVP here.
  • All Things Math: A parent coffee that will dive deep into Wellington approaches math instruction in Little Jags through 4th grade. The coffee will begin at 8:15 a.m. and go on until a.m. in the Doerschlag Den on December 10. Please RSVP here.
  • We will close out 2024 with winter parties! Little Jags through kindergarten students will celebrate winter at 10 a.m. on December 19, and first through fourth grade students will celebrate at 2 p.m. Room parents will be reaching out soon to organize the snacks and crafts.

In this season of gratitude, I hope students find time during Thanksgiving break, Tuesday, November 26 – Friday, November 29, to practice gratitude, recharge, and explore. We look forward to welcoming our eager learners back for our normal schedule on Monday, December 2.

Thank you for entrusting us with the little moments that, together, shape your child's journey. We are grateful to celebrate each one with you this year.

Best,

Shelley Brown
