Last fall, when Grammy and Academy Award winner Jon Batiste visited Wellington, Zac Barton ’26 wasn't expecting to end up onstage with him.
Batiste came to the Blanchard Performing Arts Center through the generosity of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), allowing Upper School students to hear directly from an artist whose career has crossed genres, mediums, and stages around the world.
Then came a moment no one expected.
As Batiste demonstrated how he senses sound within a space, he hummed a tone that reverberated through the BPAC. From his seat, Zac, an accomplished pianist, called out the note.
Batiste looked up, smiled, and beckoned him forward.
What followed was an improvised duet, a brief, brilliant exchange between two musicians listening and responding to one another in real time.
The moment was spontaneous, but the musicianship Zac brought to it wasn't. He recognized the note, accepted Batiste's invitation, sat down at the piano, and began to play without knowing exactly what would come next.
Zac's duet was one memorable moment in an afternoon centered on creativity, connection, and artistic expression. Between lighthearted anecdotes and reflective moments, Batiste shared how he approaches art as both discipline and expression, a way of listening to the world and making meaning from what he hears.
Faculty adjusted the Upper School schedule so every student could attend, making room for an experience that couldn't have been planned into a class period. Students could hear Batiste's perspective, ask questions, and see creativity unfold in real time.
And for a few remarkable minutes, they watched one of their own classmates become part of it.
