The Wellington Engagement Index

Overview

The Wellington Engagement Index is a software tool that measures student engagement by asking students to plot how challenged they feel by each class and how much they love each class. These different combinations of love and challenge can be categorized by quadrant. For example, students in the high-love, high-challenge quadrant tend to be highly engaged. In contrast, students in the low-love, low-challenge quadrant often show signs of boredom.

Student Platform

To complete the Index, students click on each of their classes one at a time and choose a spot on the grid to show how much they love the class and how challenged they feel by it. The Index takes students 2-4 minutes to complete.

Data Dashoards

Once students complete the Engagement Index, teachers and administrators have immediate access to the data. The platform supports analysis across a range of focuses, including individual classes, departments, divisions, and the school. Schools can choose to administer the Engagement Index as often as needed throughout the school year to support their academic goals.

Adaptable to Your School’s Priorities

Academic leaders use the Engagement Index in multiple ways. Some schools make it a component of their teacher feedback systems. Others track the growth and progress of individual students. Some present it as evidence to support innovative programs and instructional approaches, while others build their instructional coaching work on it. We designed the tool to be flexible and adaptable, allowing schools to use it in the ways that matter most to them.
