When Words Still Matter: Middle School Spelling Bee

In an age of spell check, predictive text, and AI writing tools, Wellington’s Middle School Spelling Bee reminds students that language still begins with human thinking. Held January 23, the annual Bee challenged students to rely on focus, memory, and an understanding of how words work rather than a digital safety net. Competitors navigated demanding vocabulary such as ominous, compunction, and chandelier, demonstrating poise under pressure.

Summer Schroter ’30 emerged as this year’s champion after correctly spelling the final word, concierge.

Beyond correct letters, the Bee emphasizes listening skills, confidence, and real-time, calm decision-making. It remains a meaningful academic tradition because clear thinking and precise language still matter, no matter how advanced the tools become.
