Position Description:
The Bus Driver is responsible for safely transporting students along set morning and afternoon routes, field trips, and other related school activities. The Bus Driver is responsible for ensuring the safety, reliability, and maintenance of the school’s transportation fleet, including buses and vans.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates empathy and professionalism when working with students.
- Performs pre-trip inspections and report any mechanical issues promptly.
- Complies with all school safety policies and state transportation regulations at all times.
- Enforces the transportation safety protocols and procedures to ensure student well-being.
- Ensures vehicles are clean, fueled, and fully stocked with emergency equipment and first aid supplies.
- Performs regular inspections and preventative maintenance on school vehicles, including buses and vans, to maintain safety and state compliance.
- Tracks vehicle mileage, fuel usage, service intervals, and inspection schedules.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must know the rules, regulations, procedures, and laws as they relate to the operation of a passenger vehicle.
- Strong knowledge of vehicle maintenance, diagnostics, and repair practices.
- Understanding of Ohio Department of Education transportation regulations and inspection standards.
- Ability to work independently and respond to urgent issues quickly and effectively.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and act professionally when interacting with students, staff, and vendors.
- Must be consistently available for assigned routes (morning 6:30am-8:30am; afternoon 2:30pm-5:30pm)
- Must be available to support field trips as needed during the school day, typically between 8:30am-3:30pm
- Must be available for Evening and Saturday athletic transportation if needed, with schedules ranging from 8:00am and 9:00pm
- High school diploma or GED required
- Must be 21 years of age or older
- Possession of a valid Ohio Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with School Bus and Passenger endorsements.
- Certification in vehicle safety inspection (e.g., ASE or state-specific credentials).
- Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.
- Frequent standing, bending, kneeling, crawling, and climbing under vehicles.
- Exposure to weather conditions when working outdoors or on vehicles.
- Ability to operate a variety of power tools and diagnostic equipment safely.
