Wellington Engagement Dimensions
Introducing Wellington Engagement Dimensions, a new Engagement Data Tool from The Wellington Initiative
Wellington Engagement Dimensions provides a comprehensive look at teaching and learning across four dimensions: behavioral, cognitive, emotional, and instructional engagement. Similar to a course feedback survey, students share their perspectives by responding to statements about their engagement and by writing comments that expand on their responses.
Wellington Engagement Dimensions prioritizes student voice and offers a well-rounded view of the classroom experience. It supplements and deepens your Wellington Engagement Index data and can serve as a key component of any teacher evaluation, observation, and feedback system.
Wellington Engagement Dimensions focus on four key areas of engagement: behavioral, cognitive, emotional, and instructional.
Behavioral Engagement focuses on how students interact in the classroom. The statements in this dimension address student focus, behavior, and effort. Data from this dimension gives you a sense of classroom management. Sample Statement: I put my best effort into this class.
Cognitive Engagement focuses on how students think about their learning. The statements in this dimension address teacher clarity, feedback, class structure, and learning growth. Data from this dimension gives you insight into the challenge, rigor, and teaching mechanics that lead to deep learning.
Emotional Engagement focuses on how students feel about their learning. The statements in this dimension address how the teacher cares for and knows each student, as well as how the teacher fosters a love of learning. Data from this dimension provides insight into students’ motivation and perceptions of the learning experience.
Instructional Engagement focuses on understanding how instructional design impacts engagement. The statements in this dimension address the balance of teacher-led instruction, graded assignments, and collaborative work. Data from this dimension gives you insight into how students experience the chosen instructional design and how shifting structures and approaches can improve engagement.
Engagement Dimensions integrates the major areas of teaching and learning, from classroom management and instructional design to academic challenge and rigor, along with students’ love of learning and motivation, to provide a detailed dataset for teacher growth, coaching, or evaluation.
Students complete a Dimensions Survey for each of their classes, sharing both their responses to the Dimensions Survey Metrics and any comments they wish to provide to elaborate on their answers. Each of the statements they respond to is tied to one of the four Engagement Dimensions. For each class, the process takes 8-10 minutes and is seamlessly integrated into the Wellington Engagement Data Tools platform.
Data is available immediately after students complete their Dimensions surveys on both the administrative and teacher dashboards. Results are displayed by dimension so you can quickly zoom in on individual statements or zoom out to examine broader trends in behavioral, cognitive, emotional, and instructional engagement.
In tandem with the Dimensions graphs, student comments provide context and clarity to the quantitative data. Together, this robust, well-rounded dataset provides teachers and administrators with clear, actionable insights to improve practice and enhance student engagement.
